MUN. Those three letters alone may invoke fear in your heart, but for 2 days in April, I got to take part in the Diplomathon MUN 2022 and after that, I can confidently say that it was one of the best experiences of my life.
Diplomathon has two committee days. My committee, the World Economic Forum, had the topic "The future of cryptocurrencies". Instead of the boring two-day conferences you might be imagining, let me set the scene.
You represent a global superpower. You're feared, respected, a delegate with all the power. However, whatever power it offers you is nothing but a fickle afterthought if you choose the wrong words. All it takes is one misstep, one minor gaffe to send you tumbling from the throne of power. However, you are not afraid. Your goal is to push your country's vision into global agendas, as is every other delegate's. Through alliances, diplomacy and challenges, forge a path to ensure your country's ideals are fulfilled in a new global agenda.
See, not that boring now, is it? This is what you feel when you step foot in an MUN. It's a liberating experience, seeing research that you did beforehand pay off tremendously in your debates. During Diplomathon, I had the pleasure to become acquainted with fellow students all over the UAE, with the venue itself being a really large area with excellent lunches and slightly-below-average snacks for the evening.
Overall, I enjoyed my experience at Diplomathon. It was fun, enlightening and a far departure from many MUNs I'd experienced in the past. If you want to enroll for an MUN (not necessarily a Diplomathon event), I would highly recommend checking out https://internationalmun.org. Even in virtual form, their MUNs still felt like (and were) a compelling experience.
